Since the structure and orientation of the genes in the penicillin gene cluster is the same in both Aspergillus (33) and Penicillium (6, 25) species the most likely hypothesis is that the cluster was formed before the split between Aspergillus and Penicillium occurred (13), therefore implying that all the species belonging to the genus Penicillium that lack the ability to produce penicillin have lost this ability throughout the evolution from a common ancestor able to synthesize the antibiotic.
